diy flower crown

I’m jumping on the flower crown wagon. I don’t care if they are tired from being donned at every maternity and wedding shoot since 2013. They are still gorgeous, and it’s time I had my turn as a flower queen.

This beauty was made specifically for Le Diner en Blanc – an all white pop up diner party under the stars. This is a fantastic ‘secret’ event held in cities all over the world. Read all about how I found out about it, got myself invited to it, and had THE BEST time in this post.

Originally, I was going to buy a flower crown. However, my amazon search did not turn up anything spectacular. Etsy did have some stunning options, but true to my nature, I didn’t allow enough time for an Etsy order. Thus, I decided to get creative and make my own.

After watching a handful of tutorials on youtube, I combined various techniques and improvised resulting in the process below. It was surprisingly easy and cheap.

Materials (all purchased at Hobby Lobby for about $25)

  1. Floral stem wire – This is thick and somewhat flexible. Use this to make the base of the crown.
  2. Floral coiled wire – This is thin and very flexible. Use this to attach the flowers to the base.
  3. Greenery & flowers –  I went with fake, because I was really worried about wilting. However, I LOVE the look of fresh flowers. It’s almost the same process regardless of which you choose.
  4. Wire cutters – Even rusty ones will do.

Steps:

  1. Build the base with the stem wire – Make a circle that will sit nicely on your head by curving two pieces of wire and wrapping the ends together. Note: Once you add the flowers it will be tighter, so make it slightly bigger than you want the final product to be. If you mess this up like I did, it’s not the end of the world. It will just sit a bit higher.
  2. Add greenery to the base – Starting anywhere wrap the greenery around the base. Keep adding greenery until you have covered the base. Cute off any extra. If your greenery has wire in it like mine did, you won’t need the coiled wire for this step. However, if you opt for real flowers, you will need to use the coiled wire to secure the greenery. This was a bit awkward, because I was so concerned about it looking perfect. What I learned is that it doesn’t really matter –  just get the greenery on the base.
  3. Attaching the flowers – Cut the stem so that it’s 2-4 inches. Hold it again the base, and attach it by wrapping the the coiled wire around both the flower stem and the base. Try to let it organically come together. I placed a few flowers on randomly, and then put in on my head to see how it looked. Luckily, it is very easy to remove a flower if you don’t like the placement. When working with fresh flowers, just be careful not to handle them too much.
  4. Just keep going – Keep adding flowers until you’re happy with the overall look. I probably tried on the crown 20 times during this process to get the look I wanted. During this step make sure to there aren’t any wires poking you.

Voila! While I always encourage you to try your own DIY projects, I realize that isn’t everyone’s style. Below are some beautiful options that are just a few clicks away. I also included items similar to my full outfit.
