Today’s post is all about the oversized wool coat trend and how to SPLURGE, SAVE, or STEAL. I bet you can guess my fav 😉 Living in Chicago, it’s never too difficult for me to justify a coat purchase. I wear coats 6 months of the year, so I get a lot of bang for my buck. That said, invest is a relative term to a thrifter. It’s actually more of a space investment than a financial one. Before we jump into the goods, let’s chat trend.
Statement coats are errwhere this season. I have especially noticed lots of oversized camel-colored ones, and while I love a neutral more than most, it seems a tiny bit drab. Perhaps because my hair, skin, and coat all blend together to create a big beige blob. Thus, I very much prefer a darker or patterned option.
Not that I need to sell this trend anymore, but I must highlight the timeless and universal nature of a great wool coat. Literally anyone can pull it off. You can go preppy, masculine, classic, or funky. I know it’s a versatile piece when I can see both my mom (who is very stylish, but in her 60s) and my husband (who is also stylish, but norm core) rocking any one of these options. Now, on to the coats!
SPLURGE: St John Plaid Knit Coat / Saks Fifth Avenue. It doesn’t get more sophisticated than this classic black and white coat. The clean lines makes it super sharp, and the modest plaid pattern add just the right amount of interest. It is a beautiful jacket, and stinkin’ it better be for $2295. Right now it’s on sale for $1377 which is an improvement, but still more than I can stomach for one piece of clothing. Oh the damage I could do at Goodwill with $1300! On the bright side, this is a classic item that could literally last a lifetime or more. This coat is an investment indeed.
SAVE: TopShop Check Belted Wool Blend Coat / TopSHOP. I love this lower priced version with a hint of red. It’s shown oversized which makes it funkier – not to mention the model and the shoes. Small tweaks make the coat look much more youthful. This beauty will only set you back $190 which is mo’ better, but still kind of a splurge in my world. I do think it’s worthy since it’s still a wool blend and not all synthetic fabric. Good for you and the environment.
STEAL: Vintage Drizzle ‘Grandpa’ Plaid Wool coat/ The Hunt Shop. This is my favorite option (obvi!) and was hunted by my bestie and business partner, Helen. You can see why we named it Grandpa. It’s made by Drizzle, a outerwear brand that I’m pretty such doesn’t exist anymore. Also a wool blend and made right here in the U.S.A. The best part is that it was a major steal at only $25. A major pro of vintage or older jackets is that they really are made for utility and not just looks. Case in point, this jacket is so warm and cozy, and the pockets are in the perfect spot. Thank you Drizzle designer(s)! Lucky for you, I’ve hit my coat capacity, so this one is going right into The Hunt Shop closet. Next stop your closet?
