nyfw spring 2015

This year I was lucky enough to be in NYC during fashion week. Was I there for NYFW? Not really, I was there for my über corporate, banking job where a patterned scarf is considered bold. However, I made the most of my week long stay by soaking up every ounce of inspiration.

By day I worked on 5th avenue and by night I stayed at the industrial yet luxurious Refinery Hotel. I spent all the hours in between eating my favorite kind of pizza in Bryant Park (sorry, I’m not sorry deep dish), walking the dirty streets, and I even managed to eek my way into a couple fashion events.

There are two reasons fashion shows make me swoon: 1) It’s a production – even if I loath the clothes or if they are completely unwearable, I can still appreciate the artfully crafted show. It’s part of the designer’s soul out there and respect must be paid. 2) Inspiration – what we do at THS isn’t exactly high fashion; however our motto is up-cycling and unless you are Lady Gaga wearing a skyscraper for a hat, isn’t all fashion reworking an idea from the past and trying to make it better? So, chances are I can emulate what I see in the shows and this is is what I want to share with you today. Let’s talk about how to take runway inspiration and translate it into everyday life.

One more thing before we get to the trends. You don’t have to be at NYFW to get a front row seat. TECHNOLOGY IS AMAZING, and you can experience a lot of it eating cookie dough on your couch. At NYFW Live you can watch all the shows. London, Milan, and Paris are also just one click away. Don’t have the time or will to watch all the shows? This site also features highlight articles and videos.

Ok, now onto the goods! Three of my favorite trends from this year’s Spring 2015 NYFW shows are…

1. Sport and Utility

It’s time to break out the racer backs and mesh you sporty spices. Rag + Bone showed an array of  jackets, vests, loose tunic-style dresses all in neutral tones with strings attached. Maybe because I was actually able to get into this show, or maybe because I live in Chicago where utility is a necessity, or maybe just because I live my life in neutrals, I LOVE THIS COLLECTION.

Our copycat look is a light weight utility jacket paired with a flowy white vintage pleated skirt both of which will be available in our Spring 2015 THS Tradesy closet.

As someone with an athletic build, this style really works for me. ALWAYS remember to keep your body type in mind. Luckily, sporty works on most bodies, so just be sure pair utility with something soft i.e. a vintage flowy skirt. This way you don’t end up looking like a linebacker, or worse, a hiker.

2. 60’s Mod Shapes

Tory Birch showed A LOT of this. For someone who doesn’t have a strongly defined waist and loves to show of their stems, a mod dress is money.

You can get a jump start on this trend with this color block mod number available in our 2014 Fall THS Tradesy closet.

3. Fringe

Proena Schouler went there. But we aren’t talking western fringe; this is a more sophisticated approach. No one is happier than cats. Like real cats. That will attack you…

I love the ode to the roaring 20s. Pay homage without looking like a lunatic by throwing an oversized sweater over a fringe dress and pairing it with some bold modern accessories.

Xo,

Katie

Currently it seems like WordPress is the best blogging platform available right now.
(from what I’ve read) Is that what you are using on your
